This might be the grossest post I make.

I was at a Sushi Restaurant (that shall remain nameless) and I tried to order some healthy food on the menu. I’ve never actually been to this place, and it is in Northern VA. Unfortunately, they didn’t have my favorites, which included uni (sea urchin). Well, all was not lost. I went ahead with the other stuff and man, it just didn’t taste right. It tasted like the fish had been sitting on the shelf the whole day. I know now that must trust your instincts.

After a few bites, I just wasn’t feeling it, but I come from a blue collar family that believed in plate cleaning. I was in it to finish.

Okay. Done.

After I pay up and leave the place, I walk out the front door and I see this:

Whoa, someone threw up. I feel bad for them. They were probably tasting what I was tasting. Wow!

When I was 6 years old, my mom took my older brother and I to learn Tae Kwon Do from a priest. It was pretty fun back then. We learned in a park where they had gum balls all over the ground so we had to pick them up with our feet while we were doing katas. Over the winter, we would go to the priest’s house and learn in his garage. I wonder where that guy is now. His name was Mr. Strickland. I still remember the throw that he taught us.

Here is a video of the Brazilian Jiu Jitsu (BJJ) class at BETA Academy.

This is part of the kids martial arts program.

Have you ever seen the DVD, “The Road to a Championship” with Xande Ribeiro? I liked the advice that the Riberio brothers gave in it. Saulo was talking about how he and Xande were going on vacation to take a break from jiu jitsu. However, they were taking an active vacation. They were going to the Hawaiian tropics to do a lot of swimming. It would fill the lunges with air and give them a good work out. Upon their return, they would get back to training for the Mundials.

Well, we don’t have beaches here in DC like they do in the pacific, but Francis Pool is not a bad place to go. It is free for DC residents, and only $4.00 for others. There was some cute women walking around, and I felt refreshed after hanging out for a while. But of course, we heard thunder, and people had to get out of the pool. =)

After doing some swimming, I always get the munchies, and then right afterwards I want to crash. I decided to go and get some food at Kramer Books. “Afterwards” is the restaurant inside it.

Steamed mussels hit the spot. Right now, I’m at the point at which you want to crash after going swimming. However, I got some laundry to do. Oh well. So far, it’s been a good Sunday.

For some, the weekends are for rest. For others, Saturday morning is a good time to get some Brazilian Jiu Jitsu training in.

Instructor Nakapan teaches the Saturday jiu jitsu class and has the students start from the side body position. These are positional drills that we do instead of always starting at a neutral position. This makes us work hard for the position from the start. If the person on bottom reverses or escapes, then the drill is reset, and you begin again from side body.

Here, Instructor Nakapan Phungephorn teaches his students about side body fundamentals.

Jessie works from the bottom position.

Sandra (bottom) works with Stacy.

After the class training, we have open mat. This is when team members can just work together on anything they feel like training.

Instructor Nakapan (left) works with Aaron France.

Mike Ross, always willing to help out.
