Local News In DC: MASE Training captures Featherweight Title at Muay Thai Event

Carlos Lopez (R) of MASE Training at Thai Championship Boxing

STERLING, VA – Operation Octagon’s Thai Championship Boxing event was held at the MASE Training facility in Sterling, VA on January 29, 2011. The event featured 17 muay thai fights from thai boxing teams primarily in Virginia, DC, and Maryland. The event was held in a packed house where full seat capacity was reached and many fans had to stand and watch most of the action.

The sold out event was headlined by the match up between MASE Training’s Carlos Lopez (3-0) and Tommy McDonnell from the Academy of MMA. At stake was the Thai Championship Boxing Featherweight Title.

Lopez got to work in the first round exchanging some strikes with McDonnell.  At about the one minute mark, McDonnell went in and landed a leg kick to which Lopez responded immediately with a head kick that sent McDonnell down to the ground.  The referee started the count and let the match continue.  Lopez immediately went in and threw punches that put McDonnell again on the canvas.  McDonnell got up one more time to the referee’s count and the match was allowed to continue.  Smelling blood, Lopez went in charging straight at his opponent and put him on the ground one last time before the referee ended the bout for the first round TKO.

Also fighting out of MASE Training was 14 year old Junior Villeda (3-0). The young muay thai fighter took on a game Joshua Peters of Capitol Punishment MMA in Silver Spring, MD. After going the full three rounds, the judges awarded Villeda the victory by split decision.

When asked about the performance of his team, MASE trainer Scott Howard stated that Lopez was instructed to “be opportunistic off of the leg attacks.” He was very pleased with Lopez’ kick to the head in the first round and was happy with the fighter’s quick start in the fight. Howard also commented about Villeda stating that he “went out there and showed great heart. His technique was very good.” “I couldn’t be more happy with these guys,” he said.
