Vanguard Gym at Thai Championship Boxing

STERLING, Va.-The Thai Championship Boxing event was held on January 29, 2011 at the MASE Training facility. A total of 14 muay thai teams were represented during the event. Of the 14 teams, four of them had four or more bouts during the event.

MMAinDC.com tabulated the win percentages of these teams and the top three were Vanguard Gym at 75% (3-1), BETA Academy at 60% (3-2), and Gold Medal Grappling at 50% (2-2). There were no draws.

Steven Adams (R-Gold Medal Grappling) wins a unanimous decision

Vanguard Gym’s muay thai fighters were Reed Miller, Aubrey Hummer, Billy Reynolds, and Jason Doucette. Miller went three rounds and won a unanimous decision against Tyler Boswell of Coalition MMA. Aubrey Hummer and Billy Reynolds faced game opponents that resulted in split decision wins by both of the competitors.

Vanguard Gym head coach Doug Esposito commented on the event stating, “I was really impressed by the over-all quality of the fights and the fighter’s techniques. In all the fights I saw, the guys showed good heart, had a well thought out game plan, and were respectful to their opponents and other teams.” Esposito also mentioned that goal planning is a very important part of his team’s success.

Nakapan Phungephorn’s BETA Academy fielded five muay thai fighters. The team was led by strong performances by Chuck Yetter (2-0) and Mereb Andemichael (2-0). Yetter won his bout via second round corner stoppage while Andemichael won by unanimous decision. Amad Shojael-Zambrana also won his debut by second round TKO.

When asked about his team’s performance, Phungephorn stated, “I am so proud of each and every fighter that stepped into the ring this weekend.” He went on to say, “Special thanks to Coach Joel and Master Leo Dalla for matching up the fighters. I definitely look forward to more cooperative and challenging events between our two schools in the future.”

Notes:

MMA Institute led the win percentages by going undefeated at 3-0 for the teams that did not fight more than three bouts.

MASE Training went 2-0 and captured the Featherweight Title with a first round TKO by Carlos Lopez over Tommy McDonnell.
