STERLING, Va. – In the suburbs of northern Va. lies the sole De La Riva association BJJ school in the area. Tony Passos, a first degree Brazilian jiu-jitsu black belt under Ricardo De La Riva, teaches BJJ at the MASE training center.
Tony Passos’ BJJ story began in 1998 in the north of Brazil, where he started training under Moacir Boca, a black belt under Ricardo De La Riva. After originally starting jiu-jitsu in order to lose weight, Passos attained his blue belt and was hooked on training from then on. “It was just something I believed was my calling,” said Passos.
In 2002, Passos arrived in the United States and went right to teaching. The current location of his team is at the MASE training center, where he has been teaching jiu-jitsu for the last two years.
During Passos’ earlier years of training, he competed extensively as a white, blue, and purple belt. His most recent endeavors in competition were as a black belt, competing in the American Nationals, the Pan American Championships, and the World Championships. “I’m looking forward to 2011 to compete very strongly,” said Passos.
When asked to discuss his style of jiu-jitsu, Passos’ stated that his style relies on frequent movement from the back position, and keeping things tight from the top position. He also stated that he likes to represent the school and the history when doing jiu-jitsu, “I like the De La Riva guard and De La Riva hooks,” said Passos.
Since the start of his teaching in 2002, Passos’ students have earned the ranks from blue to brown. Passos is proud of their efforts and wins in the American Nationals, Pan American Championships, and local tournaments.
As for mixed martial arts, Passos stated that “we have some students doing MMA, too,” citing first round wins in the Ultimate Warrior Championship (UWC) and Shogun Fights 3 by Dustin Pague.
When going into more detail about his team, Passos stated that he wanted to thank his students, and that “without them I wouldn’t be here..”
